Festive Market at North End Road
We had a a lovely day, meeting new people and doing lots of festive wreath making at the North End Road Festive market on 6th December. The idea is to encourage more local interest in the market and to support our local high street, which is facing so much pressure from internet shopping and indoor shopping malls. There was no traffic for the day, enabling people to wander stress free among the regular stalls and shops and the festive ones also. Lots of great food to eat and friendly people to talk with. Autumn visit from Chelsea Physic Garden Education team
It was lovely to welcome Michael and Liv from Chelsea Physic Garden to visit us here in Hammersmith, talk with them about some possible project work and show them where our local studies sessions take place. Like the Urban Studies Centre, Chelsea Physic Garden has a new outreach project as a result of support from John Lyon’s Charity. This is now being delivered by Liv and she is busy visiting local school and making new links with teachers. Annual General Meeting on 23rd September!
H&F Urban Studies Centre will be celebrating our AGM this year on 23rd September from 4.30 pm. We will be showing work from Year 5 of St. Thomas of Canterbury Catholic School “Hammersmith in World War One” project which was supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. There will also be a short talk from Rob Kryzyszowski from the Royal Institute of Town Planning, marking its centenary. What was life like in Hammersmith and Fulham a hundred years ago and how did it change following the outbreak of World War One? Children from Year 5 Seals class at St Thomas of Canterbury Primary school in Fulham have been working as historians, exploring their local area and uncovering secrets about the real people and events from this important part of our history.
